A creme purple the colour of the last inch in a wine glass. Dark enough for the stalls.
Muted grey-blue, opaque and calm. Wet slate pavement, on your fingertips under the marquee lights.
Jewel purple with a high-gloss finish. Looks like a dark window with the lamps on behind it.
Lavender in a pocket-sized tube. Smells like a linen cupboard in August, handy for November.
Ambre Noir for the coat pocket: a cream for gloved hands that smell better afterwards.
Bergamot and hinoki, a clean cedar-ish note for the cloakroom queue. Keeps company with wool.
Three little creams, one for the bag, one for the desk, one for the bedside table.
White musk and amber in a travel spray: the bone-coloured, warm-inside part of the evening.
Vanilla, lavender and a suede leather accord. Like a good glove warmed in a coat pocket.
Black pepper, incense and dark leather. Smells like the velvet curtain after the house lights drop.
Glowing leather with vanilla and amber: lamplit, a little spiced, best worn indoors after rain.
Black leather, violet and jasmine. The most theatrical thing on this page, and rather good company.
Critic at Large
Everyone reaches for the plain loafer. This one has a square toe, block heel and gold buckle, so it earns the walk home.

Grape patent is the dissenting vote: close enough to plum black to belong, with studs for the curtain call.
