Folk Club Thursday

Folk Club Thursday asks for warmth that is worn in rather than switched on. Here are corduroy built for three hours on a bench, suede that welcomes a scuff, lambswool for the draughty stairs, and balms for hands that tune. Nothing squeaks. Some of it costs very little. All of it improves by the second Thursday.

The walk-through

Low lamps. A back room above a pub, someone tuning a guitar. This week is about warmth that's worn in, not switched on.

Olive corduroy, cut straight. Enough give for a long bench and a longer second set.

The one splurge. Washed black shearling, and winters of wear to settle the bill.

Dark tartan, pure lambswool. Wear it indoors until the radiators catch up.

Wool and cashmere in cable knit. Buttoned to the neck for the second verse.

Beeswax and honey in a pocket tube, for the cold walk over.

The rest of the exhibition is on Shopience. Bring something warm. Stay for the last song.

I The Coat Pegs

Two heavy hitters, hung where the room can see them.

II The Cloakroom

Scarves, boots and satchels, shed at the door and reclaimed later.

III The Tuning Table

Balms and small comforts for hands, lips and the quiet between sets.
