Stage Door Rain
Stage Door Rain is about the walk between two kinds of light: marquee and lamp. Velvet, patent, wool felt and leather were chosen for how they hold a wet street, in ink navy, oxblood and slate. Nothing here is flimsy. Everything is heavier than it needs to be, on purpose, and warmer once you are inside.
I The Cloakroom
Gloves, mostly, and one dress. Hands first, then everything else.
01Monogram Leather Glove
$$Black soft leather, buckled twice. Wear it with a navy wool coat and keep the sleeves long.
02Abbot Loafer
$$All-over patent with gold hardware on the toe. A loafer that catches the streetlight on purpose.
03Regency Pearl Loafer
$$Black patent, with a gold and pearl chain across the vamp. Stage-door glamour for the walk to the cab.
04Monogram Leather Glove
$$Soft tan leather, cashmere-cotton lining, twin buckles. The pair to buy once and wear for years.
05Arlene Leather Gloves
$Leather with a zip, which is tidier than a buckle. Wear with a trench, cuffs just covered.
06Arlene Leather Gloves
$Brown leather, zip fastening. Sleek enough for the walk home, and under $60.
07Leather Sheepskin Vent Glove
$$Slate-grey leather, shearling cuffs, brushed lining. Wet-pavement colour outside, warm once you are in.
08Kensington Mini Dress
$$Black ribbed roll neck, gold hardware, shoulder pads. Theatrical in the right measure, with opaque tights.
09Insulated Touchscreen Gloves
$$Dark brown, insulated and touchscreen-friendly. Dignified enough that you will not pull them off to text.
10Norwood Gloves
$Black, quilted and leather-trimmed, with faux fur inside. Warm hands for the stage-door queue, under $50.
11Leather Sheepskin Vent Glove
$$Black leather, shearling cuff, brushed lining. Made for the colder walk, under a heavy coat sleeve.
12Carlton Knitted Glove
$Navy knit with a leather tab. The cheapest way into the palette, and it earns its keep by December.
13Carlton Knitted Glove
$Grey knit with a leather tab, close to wet slate. The sensible pair, and under $30.
II The Stage Door
Patent, felt and velvet, for standing in the rain.
14Chie Mihara Teil Buckle-detail Patent Loafers
$$$Black patent, square toe, block heel, gold-tone buckle. Steady enough for wet cobbles and a long interval.
15Etro Velvet Single-Breasted Blazer Jacket
$$$Single-breasted velvet, by Etro. The jacket the week was written around: wear it home.
16Maison Michel Giulia Wool-felt Beret
$$$Black wool felt with patent-leather trim: velvet's glossy cousin. Wear it at an angle on wet pavement.
17Rocket Dog Gabby Black Patent Loafer Shoes
$Black patent, plush insole, twenty-eight dollars. Puddles are an acceptable test of its character.
18Chie Mihara Teil Buckle-detail Patent Loafers
$$$A block heel, square toe and gold-tone buckle on black patent. Good wet-pavement glare.
19Mini HC Umbrella
$Black, with a wooden handle and push-up button. The small gold lettering is all the sparkle we allow.
20Chie Mihara Teil Buckle-detail Patent Loafers
$$$Square toe, block heel, gold-tone buckle. A patent loafer built for standing at the stage door.
21Chie Mihara Teil Buckle-detail Patent Loafers
$$$The plain loafer is the easy pick. A square toe, block heel and gold buckle earn the walk home.
22BRIONI Essential Patent Leather Loafers
$$$Black patent leather, cut plainly. The loafer you buy once and polish for years.
23Rocket Dog Gabby Black Patent Loafer Shoes
$Black patent at $28, puddles included. It does more than the price suggests.
24Maison Michel Giulia Wool-felt Beret
$$$Black wool felt with patent trim, so the shine arrives from above.
25BRIONI Essential Patent Leather Loafers
$$$Patent leather loafers with nothing added. The investment piece that outlasts every production you see.
26Rocket Dog Gabby Black Patent Loafer Shoes
$Twenty-eight dollars, glossy as a puddle, with a plush foam insole. The Italian loafer can wait.
27Ruslan Baginskiy Wool-felt Cowboy Hat
$$$Black wool felt, pinched crown, curved brim. Wear it in the rain and let people wonder.
28Borsalino Deva Wool Hat
$$$Wool, wide brim, pinched crown, a small gold-tone plaque. Sensible enough for the walk to the station.
29POLO RALPH LAUREN Velvet Blazer
$$$A velvet blazer from Polo Ralph Lauren: the sensible entry point to the whole idea.
30Prada Leather Loafers
$$$Black patent, low block heel, debossed logo on the tongue. Quiet, glossy, built for wet pavement.
31Chie Mihara Taleah Studded Leather Loafers
$$$Grape purple with studs and a block heel. It shines on wet pavement without any black patent.
32Borsalino Wool Basque Hat By Borsalino
$$Round, unlined wool-felt Basque hat. It handles rain better than the waxed jacket, and costs less.
33Chie Mihara Taleah Studded Leather Loafers
$$$Grape purple, almond toe, block heel. Black patent is the safe vote; this one has more nerve.
III The Dressing Room
Leather, plum and amber, applied before the house lights drop.
34TOM FORD Ombré Leather Eau de Parfum with Patchouli & Vetiver 3.3 oz/ 100 mL
$$$Black leather, violet and jasmine. The most theatrical thing on this wall, and rather good company.
35DND - Gel & Lacquer - Plum Wine - #453
$A creme purple, the colour of the last inch in a wine glass. Dark enough for the stalls.
36TOM FORD Eau d'Ombre Leather Eau de Toilette with Vanilla & Amber 1.7 oz / 50 mL eau de toilette spray
$$Glowing leather with vanilla and amber. Lamplit and a little spiced, best worn indoors after rain.
37DND - DC Duo - Blue Plum - #DC101
$A muted, opaque grey-blue. Wet slate pavement, on your fingertips under the marquee lights.
38DND - Hema-Free & TPO-Free Gel & Lacquer - Glass Plum - 063
$Jewel purple, high gloss. It looks like a dark window with the lamps on behind it.
39Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Dark Leather Eau de Parfum with Incense & Dark Leather 3.04 oz eau de parfum spray
$$Black pepper, incense and dark leather. It smells like the velvet curtain after the house lights drop.
40Moroccanoil Hand Cream Ambre Noir 3.4 oz / 100 mL
$Ambre Noir for the coat pocket: a cream for gloved hands that smell better afterwards.
41Burberry Goddess Parfum with Vanilla and Leather 1.6 oz/50 ml parfum spray
$$Vanilla, lavender and a suede leather accord, like a good glove warmed in a coat pocket.
42Salt & Stone Bergamot & Hinoki Nourishing Hand Cream with Niacinamide + Seaweed Extract 2 oz / 60 mL
$Bergamot and hinoki, a clean, cedar-ish note for the cloakroom queue. It keeps company with wool.
43L'Occitane Mini Hand Cream Lavender 1 oz/ 30 mL
$Lavender in a pocket-sized tube. It smells like a linen cupboard in August, handy in November.
44Prada Paradoxe Eau de Parfum Travel Spray with White Musk & Amber 0.33 oz / 10 mL eau de parfum spray
$White musk and amber in a travel spray: the bone-coloured, warm-inside part of the evening.
45L'Occitane Softening Hand Cream Set
$Three little creams: one for the bag, one for the desk, one for the bedside table.
