Six-ounce waxed cotton, moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets and a corduroy collar. The jacket the hook by the door was waiting for.

Cedar brown wax, elbow patches, four flap pockets. It will look better after its first proper soaking.

Waxed cotton with a corduroy collar and a tartan lining, for the small private pleasure of opening it.

Green waxed cotton, corduroy collar, gold-tone hardware. Moss, but with a quiet shine at the fastenings.

Patchworked leather gloves, priced for daily wear. Keep them in a coat pocket and let them crease.

Italian lamb leather lined with wool, with a metal rivet. Warm hands for the walk to the gate.

Leather with tartan panels. Livelier than plain brown, still sensible enough for muddy lanes.

Green lambswool in Rosefield tartan, fringed at the ends. Wrap it twice and forget the forecast.

One hundred percent lambswool in tartan, under $35. Reasonable by any measure, and soft against a damp collar.

Plain lambswool, frayed ends, a small embroidered shield. The quiet one, and the cheapest here.

A shea butter balm in a small tin-sized tube for $8. Not woodsmoke, but useful after cold wet hands.

Hand cream and lip balm together, for the coat pocket that already holds string and a spare glove.
