Quiet Coastal, Late Light

September at the seaside, after the crowds leave: grey light, wind in the washing, and a good jumper doing real work. This exhibition gathers waxed cotton, wool, canvas, linen and silk in chalk, slate and oatmeal, with mineral sunscreen and salt for the weather itself. Nothing here is loud. Some of it is heavier than it needs to be, on purpose.

Welcome to exhibition five. This week's taste is Quiet Coastal, Late Light. Think September at the seaside, after the crowds leave. Grey light, wind in the washing, and a good jumper doing real work. Nothing here is loud. Some of it is heavier than it needs to be, on purpose.

Number one, the Bedale Wax Jacket, about three hundred dollars. Navy waxed cotton, handwarmer pockets. Ten hard Septembers, and the cost per wear nearly vanishes.

Number two, Doru wide leg trousers, seventy-nine dollars. Stone linen, wide in the leg. Roll the hem once, then add slate blue knitwear.

Number ten, the Studio Nicholson wool sweater, about six hundred dollars. Navy lambs wool, fisherman's knit, shoulder panels. It's the week's one splurge, and I think it will earn it.

Number eleven, the Crest canvas tote, a hundred and five dollars. Navy, roomy, unfussy. It carries the wet towel and the paperback without complaint.

Number twenty-four, the Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt candle, eighty-five dollars. Sea salt and sage, no coconut in sight. Light it and the grey room cools.

Number twenty-five, the matching cologne, ninety-five dollars. Mineral, woody, faintly herbal. Wet stone after the tide. Wear it with oatmeal wool.

Number forty-two, the Missoni Home zig-zag blanket, about four hundred forty dollars. Beige wool with a fringed edge. Throw it over a chair by the window.

Number forty-three, the Crown Affair hair towel, fifty-nine dollars. White waffle-knit, a beach towel's texture without the beach. Quietly useful after a cold swim.

That's the week: heavy things, quiet colours, and a bit of salt. Every object in exhibition five is waiting on Shopience, with the full edit and every room. Come and have a look.
